Guide for publishing in Jamk

Things to note when selecting a publication channel

As an author, you should select your publication channel for optimal quality and impact.
When looking for a suitable publication channel, it is important to take the target audience into account and evaluate the quality and impact of the channel. Find out about the publication channel’s open access principles, the rights retained by the author, and the possibilities for further use of the publication.
In this Publishing Guide, you can find advice related to selecting a channel, options for open access publishing and recognising predatory publications as well as useful tools for evaluating publications.

Learn about the criteria for collecting publication data

When selecting a publication channel, note the requirements of the ministry's publication data collection. For more detailed instructions read the guide of Ministry of Education and Culture: The publication data collection instructions for researchers.

Find out about the possibilities for open access (OA) publishing

The Rectors’ Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences Arene recommends that teachers and researchers working at universities of applied sciences favour publication channels that comply with OA publishing policies, including Open Access journals and serial publications in each field of education. The Ministry of Education and Culture encourages OA publishing through its funding model. In the funding model for 2021–2024, open access publications receive a weighting of 1.2.

According to the national Policy for Open Access to Scholarly Publications no later than 2022, all peer reviewed scientific articles and conference publications should be immediately openly accessible.

Research ethics

To ensure the reliability of scientific research and the credibility of its results, good scientific practice must be followed. Responsibility for complying with good scientific practice rests with the entire scientific community and each researcher.

Finnish National Board on Research Integrity (TENK) appointed by the Ministry of Education and Culture promotes responsible scientific practices, prevents research misconduct, promotes discussion and spreads information on research integrity, and monitors international development in this field.

Agreement on authorship

There must be a clear agreement on the authorship of the material before it is sent to a publisher. It is a good idea to discuss the principles of authorship before the actual writing process starts. The Finnish National Board on Research Integrity (TENK) has prepared recommendations for agreeing on authorship.

ISBN number

ISBNs identify books intended for public use. As part of metadata, identifiers such as ISBN support the identification and handling of publications and make them easier to find. Among other things, ISBNs are used in information searches, publication ordering and distribution systems, international and national joint catalogues, bibliographies and library lending systems.

You apply for a separate ISBN for each book, publication format and edition containing modifications. This makes it easier to identify publications in the publishing sector’s distribution chain and ensures that the customer can find the publication they need.
In Finland, ISBNs are assigned by the Finnish national ISBN Agency. Jamk uses centralised ISBN applications. For ISBN-number, please contact Pekka Salminen (firstname.surname@jamk.fi)
