What is data?
Research data consists of actual data and metadata. Note that this kind of data can be created outside research projects as well.
Typical instances of research data are
- survey and interview data
- measurements and observation data
- video, image, sound and textual data
Is the data produced during the research or has it been created by someone else?
- data can be collected for the research project (e.g. surveys, samples)
- data can be produced as a result of the project (an analysis of a survey or samples)
- data might have been collected already before (e.g. different statistical information, feedback collected from students)
All these need data management!
